Clearer accommodation standards positive for RSE workers, the Pacific and growers

Horticulture New Zealand (HortNZ) welcomes the Government’s introduction of clearer, more transparent accommodation standards for growers, Recognised Seasonal Employer (RSE) workers and Pacific sending countries.

“These clear and consistent standards are a positive step forward,” says Kate Scott, chief executive of HortNZ.

“They give employers greater certainty to maintain existing accommodation and invest in the additional capacity needed for future growth.

“Together with the Government’s changes to modernise the scheme in June, the accommodation review outcome is an important milestone that strengthens confidence in the future of the RSE scheme and will be welcomed by growers.”

The RSE scheme has supported New Zealand growers and Pacific communities for almost two decades, particularly during peak seasonal harvest periods, says Scott.

“It creates meaningful work opportunities for Pacific workers, enabling them to support their families and communities back home while helping growers harvest crops at the peak of the season.

“Growers take their responsibilities towards RSE workers seriously. Worker welfare is a top priority, and the sector works closely with Immigration New Zealand to uphold strong standards of pastoral care and respond promptly to concerns.

“The RSE scheme is more than a labour programme. It is a long-standing partnership with the Pacific that supports communities, creates jobs and helps New Zealand growers share their produce with the world.”
